Sheffield to the Reds?!

In what I wish was an April Fool's Day joke, it appears the Reds are seriously pursuing the talents (such as they are) of Mr. Gary Sheffield.

According to ESPN, the Reds are interested in Sheffield "in a limited role."

Of course, I think Corey Patterson was supposed to be a limited role kind of guy too and we all know how that turned out...

Now, I guess I don't mind the idea of Sheffield as a Red, but it seems to go against everything the Reds have said they are believing in now. Remember, just last year the Reds traded away Griffey and Dunn (their best power threat) under the guise of "younger and faster." Well, it doesn't take a mathematician to tell you that Sheffield is neither younger nor faster. In fact, he's basically (at this point) a crappier version of Dunn or Griffey...

Seriously, sometimes I think drunk monkeys could do better than Reds management.

  1. gotta remember though, as long as Cincy waits 48 hours, they can sign Sheff for the league minimum, while Detroit has to pay him $14million.
as long as he is willing to be the "late inning pinch hit guy"... that might not be a bad deal.

  2. 400K for Shef is a pretty good deal. I would think a bunch of teams would be knocking at his door tomorrow.

  3. I agree with the Captain. The issue is that the price is right. If he can help the young guys learn how to win, he could be beneficial.

On issue in Cincy and any NL city will be his arm ... he can still hit, but what can he do in the field. Therefore, I don't see it happening.

  5. any time you can incorporate a picture of drunk monkeys, that's a good thing. I think he'd be OK.
