2000 Fleer Tradition: And Thus Endeth the Box.

We made it to the end of January...and with this final day, we will also make it to the end of the 2000 Fleer Tradition box.  As of this moment, I've acquired 39 new cards for my set.  I needed over 50 to complete the whole thing, so that prospect doesn't look good.  It would, however, be nice to at least get it down to a point where I'm missing fewer than 10 cards, right?  Let's hope as we close out the box with the final three packs.

Pack 34:
24.  Dave Borkowski & Jason Wood

83.  Reggie Sanders
90.  Toronto Blue Jays
91.  Denny Stark & Gil Meche
244.  Jeff Montgomery
266.  Robinson Cancel & Kevin Barker
286.  Jason Veritek
304.  Jesse Garcia
326.  Mickey Morandini
427.  Checklist

One more new card there.  I'll take it.

Cards needed (so far):  40

Pack 35:
13.  Kyle Farnsworth
71.  Jim Edmonds
75.  Carlos Febles
77.  Carlos Perez
227.  Ruben Mateo
301.  Matt Stairs
403.  Casey Blake & Vernon Wells
417.  Wilton Guerrero
432.  Homer Bush
Dividends:  6.  Frank Thomas

Blech. Nothing new there.  Not a good way to close out the box...  One pack remains.

Pack 36:
16.  Calvin Pickering & Matt Riley
17.  Tony Clark
59.  Matt Anderson
134.  Scott Karl
220.  Ronnie Belliard
223.  John Halama
294.  Bob Wickman

315.  J.T. Snow
412.  Detroit Tigers
Who to Watch:  6.  Peter Bergeron

Well, no new inserts out of the final three packs - but I did land one last base card which I'll take.  In the end, the box yielded a grand total of 41 new cards.  Not as good as I was hoping, if I'm being honest, but it's also a lot better than it could have gone.

If you can't tell, I now have a TON of cards from this set for trade.  I'll try to put together a full trade bait page in the near future.  For now, thanks for watching along with me as I ripped an older box of cards.  It was fun - and it was definitely a fairly long lasting box of Christmas cards!

Update:
Now that all is said and done (and the cards are all sorted and tucked into my binder pages), here is where I stand on the set needs:
Fleer Tradition Set Needs:Base:  11, 14, 68, 69, 146, 150, 166, 219, 222, 231, 243, 268, 273, 323, 341, 370, 384, 399, 405
Who to Watch:  13
Dividends:  1, 3, 15
Ten-4:  1, 2, 3, 6, 9

That's much better than it was before I started the box...but as you can see, I still have my work cut out for me!

2000 Fleer Tradition: Packs 31, 32, & 33: The Penultimate Post!

Now that January is drawing to a close (hurray!), I feel the need to rapidly finish up my box of 2000 Fleer Tradition as well (it was, after all, a Christmas gift from last year).  In an effort to do exactly that prior to the end of the month, I'm opening up three of the six remaining packs today and I'll finish the remaining three packs tomorrow - just making the end-of-January deadline!

Pack 31:
60.  Milwaukee Brewers
76.  Bobby Higginson
136.  Paul O'Neill

153.  Edgar Martinez
158.  Todd Dunwoody
167.  Dan Perkins
254.  Eli Marrero
261.  Carlos Beltran
347.  Jose Jimenez
Ten-4:  4.  Mark McGwire

Alright, that was a great pack (by my standards)!  I needed the Ten-4 insert (the second Ten-4 insert of the box which is the expected amount).  I also needed the O'Neill card, so I'm very happy.

Cards needed from the box so far:  37

Pack 32:
5.  AL Batting Average Leaders
38.  Ricky Ledee
101.  Adrian Beltre
197.  Ken Caminiti
251.  Sterling Hitchcock
254.  Eli Marrero
291.  Brad Ausmus
329.  Glen Barker

396.  Randall Simon & Dave Cortea
Who to Watch:  3.  Wilton Veras

Only one new card for me out of the pack, but at this point even one is better than none.

Cards needed from the box so far:  38

Pack 33:
48.  Orlando Hernandez
51.  Quilvio Veras
102.  Alex Ochoa
157.  Andy Benes
173.  Bobby Howry
202.  Pat Meares
207.  Dante Bichette
289.  Chuck Finley
344.  Robin Ventura
380.  Darryl Hamilton

Well, I just barely gained one new card from this pack - only the Hamilton was needed by me.  Still, a new card is a new card and I won't complain!

Cards needed from the box so far:  39

Only three packs remain.  Let's hope for greatness with the final few packs - stay tuned!

Barry Larkin Collection 581: 1990 Star - #11

Barry Larkin
Year:  1990
Brand:  Star
Card number:  11

The final card in the eleven card 1990 Star Barry Larkin set is definitely a bit of a dud.  In fact, I'm fairly certain that this card only exists so that Star could produce an 11 card set (Larkin's number) rather than a ten card set.  While the front of the card is only "okay" (kind of a dark image, to be honest), the back of the card is painfully bad.  I mean, there's a decent sized Reds' logo at the top of the card...but in the middle of the card?  Nothing but an exact copy of the same log...just much, much larger.

So the set ends on a bit of a downer, but I have to say - overall this is a pretty cool little set.  Sure, it has its flaws - but it is a great set to explore all that Barry Larkin had accomplished by 1990, after basically three full seasons in the big leagues.

Trade Stack 87: The Stack Reaches 11!

Here is how this works:
Every so often (i.e. whenever I feel like it), I will add a card to a "Trade Stack".  Whenever the stack becomes appealing enough to someone, that person needs to comment on the post saying they'd like to claim the stack AND tell me which card they are sending off of my want list.  That's all you have to do - trade me ONE card (or more, of course) card from my want list for the entire stack of cards that I'm offering.  Each time, it will be first come, first serve...so act quickly (unless of course you are a gambler and hope to wait it out until there are 10+ cards in the stack that you want in exchange for a single 2004 UD Vintage card that I am looking for)!

New rule:  Please note that shipping large packages to Canada (or overseas) has become too expensive, at least when it means that all I am getting in return is a single base card.  If you happen to want me to ship to a place not in the US, please contact me first.  Maybe we can work out a larger deal that will make the increase in postage worthwhile.  I am sorry for that as I have a number of great traders in Canada but I have no control over what the USPS charges for shipping!

The Trade Stack:
Last update: 1/28/18

I have been working my way through my box of 2000 Fleer Tradition (as you probably know if you've visited my blog much this month).  Since I already owned a large chunk of the set prior to opening the box, I am rapidly accumulating a lot of duplicates.  That's alright though because cards from that set make for a nice addition to the Trade Stack - and that's exactly what I decided to do today!

Remember, you can claim the current Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off my want list (or anything LEGO since I've been getting more and more into collecting LEGO as well)!

2000 Fleer Tradition:
90.  Team card - Toronto Blue Jays
101.  Adrian Beltre - Dodgers
327.  Pokey Reese - Reds
339.  David Justice - Indians

2000 Fleer Ultra:
225.  Rusty Greer - Rangers

71.  Ichiro - Mariners

2000 Fleer Tradition: Packs 29 & 30: A Pair of Nice Inserts

Through the first 28 packs of the box, I've found 34 cards that I actually need for my set.  While that's not a terribly high number, it still keeps me on pace to come close to completing my set when all is said and done.  Let's hope I can keep finding new cards as I rip through the final eight packs.

Pack 29:
53.  Rick Helling
61.  Derrek Lee
94.  Javy Lopez
140.  Robb Nen
151.  Ramon Hernandez
269.  Fred McGriff
409.  Wally Joyner
413.  Michael Tejara & Ramon Castro
414.  Alex Gonzalez
Ten-4:  7.  Derek Jeter

The Ten-4 insert set is pretty nice...and I had decided to chase it despite the cards being fairly rare (seeded 1:18 packs).  Unfortunately for me, I already had the Jeter card.  Even worse, I already had all the base cards from this pack as well.  #totaldud

Pack 30:
41.  Alfonso Soriano & D'Angelo Jimenez
81.  Miguel Tejada
181.  Brian Giles
184.  Jose Hernandez
260.  Bret Saberhagen

274.  Troy O'Leary
358.  Jim Thome
379.  Ugueth Urbina
392.  Texas Rangers
Grasskickers:  15.  Alex Rodriguez

The Grasskicker cards are kind of cool - but they are also a little bit too rare for me to consider collecting the fifteen card set (seeded 1:30 packs).  On the bright side, I did get one new base card bringing the total number of new cards (for me) in the box to 35.

2000 Fleer Tradition: Packs 27 & 28: Keeping the Faith with the Box

After taking a couple of days off in terms of ripping packs out of my box of 2000 Fleer Tradition, I'm back at it today with two more packs.

Pack 27:
21.  Steve Woodard
39.  Jeff Kent
85.  J.D. Drew
122.  Trot Nixon
181.  Brian Giles
240.  John Smoltz

346.  Tony Gwynn
372.  Delino DeShields
378.  Ismael Valdes
383.  Scott Sauerbeck

In a pack full of only base cards, I was happy to land at least one (more accurately:  exactly one) card I needed.

Pack 28:
8.  NL Leaders:  Wins
30.  Domingo Guzman & Wiki Gonzalez
49.  Checklist
131.  Alex Fernandez

338.  John Valentin

345.  Bobby Abreu
350.  Chicago Cubs
369.  New York Yankees
382.  St. Louis Cardinals
Who to Watch:  15.  Adam Kennedy

A duplicate insert and a bunch of team cards that I already owned...but on the bright side, there were two more "regular" base cards that I needed.  I'll take it!

Cards needed (so far) from the box:  34

Delivery Time! Henry is Cardboard Great!

Henry, from the Cardboard Greats blog, recently claimed one of my Trade Stacks.  As always, the only rule for my Trade Stack is that the person claiming the pile has to send me at least one card off of my want list (or a LEGO set if they prefer).  Happily for me, Henry did a bit better than sending just one card...he actually found six cards that I still needed for my 2017 Topps Archives base set!

By the way, if you'd like to see what Henry got in his Trade Stack, he published a post about exactly that a few days ago here.

While many of you are probably turning your attention to 2018 card offerings, I'm still 100% content trying to finish of stuff from 2017 (and earlier).  As such, this envelope definitely made my day better since I'm now down to needing only 40 more cards from the 300 card base set!

My 2017 Topps Archives Wants:Base:  2, 8, 11, 13, 43, 44, 52, 61, 63, 72, 79, 97, 103, 110, 119, 122, 132, 142, 149, 157, 166, 185, 202, 204, 207, 210, 215, 218, 244, 249, 255, 266, 284, 287, 288, 290, 291, 295, 297, 300

Thanks for claiming the Trade Stack - and for the great cards, Henry!  As for anyone else, if you'd like to trade, check out my want list and make an offer!

2000 Fleer Tradition: Packs 25 & 26: How Many Cards are Needed for a Box to Feel Full to You?

I'm still enjoying (slowly) ripping through my Christmas box of 2000 Fleer Tradition.  Despite only getting a single box of baseball cards for Christmas, having that box include 36 packs means it certainly feels like I got a lot of baseball goodies for the holiday.  There's definitely something to be said for a hefty box of cards...something that I find lacking in a lot of modern products (for me, Allen & Ginter is about the "lightest" box of cards that I consider to be full).

Anyhow, enough of that rambling, let's get to the cards.  Here are the next two packs.

Pack 25:
16.  Calvin Pickering & Matt Riley

26.  Juan Gonzalez
46.  Mark Grudzielanek
63.  Fernando Vina
193.  Butch Huskey
232.  Mike Mussina

293.  Boston Red Sox
306.  Roberto Alomar
446.  NLCS
Dividends:  4.  Chipper Jones

Not a bad pack - two more new cards for my set makes me happy.

Pack 26:
28.  Trevor Hoffman
36.  Derek Bell
135.  Brad Radke
137.  Kris Benson
296.  Shawn Estes
327.  Pokey Reese
373.  Jose Offerman
436.  Scott Williamson
443.  ALCS
Who to Watch:  12.  Jeff DaVanon

I guess in a 36 pack box, not every pack will be a winner.  There wasn't a single card that I needed out of today's second pack...but at least the first pack kept me basically on pace by providing me with a pair of new cards.  There aren't too many more packs remaining in the box...and the question still remains:  Will I or won't I finish off my base set?!

Total cards needed from the box (so far):  31

Barry Larkin Collection 580: 1990 Star - #10

Barry Larkin
Year:  1990
Brand:  Star
Card number:  10

The tenth card in the eleven card 1990 Star Barry Larkin set features a cameo of an Atlanta Braves' player on the front and a fairly in depth personal write-up on the backside.  While not my favorite card in the set (who wants Braves on their Larkin cards anyhow?), I do like the written description on the back especially the shout out to Barry's brothers.  Of course, the neatest thing about Barry's personal data is that he was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and that he spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds.  There really is no better way to endear yourself to one's hometown than to do something like that (ok, the one World Series ring didn't hurt either)!

2000 Fleer Tradition: Packs 23 & 24: Hitting the Two-Thirds Mark

The last few packs from the box have proven to be quite good for my set collecting goals.  Today, we finish off the second third of the box...and with it, hopefully inch even closer to completing the full base set.

Pack 23:
10.  NL ERA Leaders
90.  Toronto Blue Jays
178.  Eric Milton
216.  Jason Johnson
233.  Magglio Ordonez
309.  Mike Hampton
360.  Moises Alou

367.  Rusty Greer
437.  Pedro Martinez
Dividends:  13.  Mark McGwire

I already had the McGwire which was too bad, but I did land one new base card so I guess I'll take that.  Better than getting shut out.

Pack 24:
84.  Eric Davis

101.  Adrian Beltre
114.  Shane Reynolds
118.  Todd Walker
186.  Derrick Gibson

229.  David Wells
241.  Mark Grace
324.  Tony Womack
418.  Rondell White
431.  Quinton McCracken

Good deal here, two more new cards for my set.

As of now, I have found 29 new cards for my set out of the first 24 packs.  That's pretty darn good all things considered...and if I get just a bit lucky in the final third, who knows, maybe I'll actually finish the set off once and for all!

Trade Stack 87: The Stack Gets a Little Rusty!

The Trade Stack:
Last update: 1/22/18

The Trade Stack is growing nicely, I don't think it'll be long before someone claims it (actually, to be honest I though someone might jump in for the Derek Jeter mini poster all by itself).  No matter, I'll keep adding to the pile until someone is enticed!

Today's addition to the Stack is a nice looking Fleer Ultra card.  For whatever reason, the sheer amount of blue on the card is appealing to me - and the rainbow foil used for the player and team name adds a touch of class to the entire card.

Remember, you can claim the current Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off my want list (or anything LEGO since I've been getting more and more into collecting LEGO as well)!

2000 Fleer Tradition: Packs 21 & 22: Cal Ripken Collection Shows Up

Another Monday begins...but at least I still have some unopened packs to help me get through the day.

Pack 21:
72.  Brady Anderson
75.  Carlos Febles
89.  Carlos Delgado

109.  Steve Finley
163.  Darryl Kile
168.  Andy Pettitte

177.  Marquis Grissom
212.  Warren Morris
357.  Pittsburgh Pirates
Who to Watch:  8.  Russell Branyan

This was an awesome pack in that I got three new cards for my set (I also needed the Febles prior to the box break beginning but that's now a double from within the box).

That brings my total number of cards needed up to 25 through 21 packs.  Let's rip one more and hope for more good news!

Pack 22:
29.  Arizona Diamondbacks
52.  Wayne Gomes

57.  Greg Maddux
154.  Ivan Rodriguez
157.  Andy Benes
221.  Jason Giambi
257.  Darin Erstad
261.  Carlos Beltran
408.  Todd Hundley
Cal Ripken Collection:  1963 Fleer design

I only needed the Gomes, but I had to scan the Ripken because it is pretty neat.  I'm not trying to complete the full Ripken insert set (they are seeded a rather tough 1:30 packs).  That said, the card is probably a keeper on its own.

Total cards needed so far:  26.  Not bad through 22 packs.

Trade Stack 87: Stupid Patriots

The Trade Stack:
Last update: 1/21/18

I just finished watching the end of the Patriots/Jaguars game.  As a Steelers fan, I normally would have wanted the Jaguars to lose...except Jacksonville was playing the Patriots and I always want the Patriots to lose, pretty much no matter what.  When New England pulled out the win, my allegiance automatically switched to whoever wins in the NFC for the Super Bowl.  Enough football talk though, baseball is nearly here!  Let's celebrate the imminent arrival of America's past time with another addition to the Trade Stack...and it's a very American addition to the pile indeed (as you'll see when you scroll down)!

Remember, you can claim the current Trade Stack in exchange for at least one card off my want list (or anything LEGO since I've been getting more and more into collecting LEGO as well)!

2013 Panini USA Baseball Champions:
46.  Riccio Torrez
48.  Brett Mooneyham

1998 Upper Deck Retro:
59.  Brad Fullmer - Expos
60.  Rondell White - Expos

2003 Fleer Box Score:
71.  Ichiro - Mariners

1998 Fleer Sports Illustrated:
Great Shots:  8.  Derek Jeter - Yankees

If you want the stack, remember - all you need to do is offer up any one card from my want list.

Want the card(s) in the stack?  Act fast - tell me which card you will send me off my want list in the comments below!  You must leave a comment on the trade stack post in order to claim the card - no more claims via email!  If no one claims this card within a reasonable amount of time (a few hours up to a few days, depending) - I'll add another card to the stack and the process will start again!
